Stranger Cole 'Rough And Smooth' + Gaylads 'Same Thing' 7"

Details

When the ‘Skank’ rhythm came into Reggae music, it was a green light to recut some old favourites from the past. ‘Rough And Tough’ from Stranger Cole. This tune of course was a massive hit for Stranger way back in the early days of Ska – produced by Duke Reid.
This slower cut dates from around the early seventies and has got all the Perry trademarks. Kinky organ sounds – and a rhythm with more space in it – than outer space. Probably built by Wailers/Upsetters. A great tune – and a rare production from Stranger for Perry.
A classic Perry production from that time. Wild and Rough – it’s not really natural to hear the smooth soulful tones of The Gaylads singing over such a powerful rhythm. But it works, and it works very well.
Old Scratch didn’t do much work with the Gaylads – Perry had a preference for the more maniacal tones of Bleechers. Perhaps he was just trying to make a point – he could produce anyone – as long as they fitted in with his style.
At the time of this release he had already gone into the pop charts – so it makes sense that a lot of artists would go along with him…
